Barry Gardener is another of the JamFactory's craftspeople, forging hand made knives.
He started knife making as a hobby in 1995,
after working on roads for more than 20 years.
He uses a combination of carbon and stainless steel in his knife
blades and a range of Australian timber for the handles
including gidgee, lace she oak, vasticola and mallee.
Barry takes inspiration from Japanese knife makers. |
Barry loves to teach others and on the day we visited he was involved in a
workshop demonstrating how it is done and allowing
his pupils to make their own knives.
One of the signs up on Barry's workshop wall are the
words of American rapper, Asher Roth:
"Do your thing. Do it unapologetically. Don't be
discouraged by criticism. You probably already
know what they are going to say. Pay no mind to the
fear of failure. It's far more valuable than success.
Take ownership, take chances, and have fun.
And no matter what don't ever stop doing your thing."
